Leominster, MA – May 2, 2019 – AIS, a leading manufacturer of commercial office furniture and seating, recently received the Worcester Business Journal’s 2019 Manufacturing General Excellence Award and the MassHire North Central and Central Region Workforce Boards’ Growing and Readying Our Workforce (GROW) Award.
Manufacturing General Excellence Award
AIS was one of six companies recognized with an award by the Worcester Business Journal this year. To be considered for the publication’s Manufacturing General Excellence Award, AIS submitted information on the company, its accomplishments, workforce investments, employee opportunities, continuous-improvement initiatives and morale-boosting activities.
“AIS is proud to call central Massachusetts our home, and the Manufacturing General Excellence Award by the Worcester Business Journal is a great honor,” AIS President and CEO Bruce Platzman said. “We’ve worked diligently to grow AIS and positively impact our region with increased jobs leading to lower area unemployment. We will continue to do our part to keep manufacturing strong in central Massachusetts.”
AIS received the Manufacturing General Excellence Award at the 4th annual Worcester Business Journal Manufacturing Summit & Excellence Awards event on April 18 at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. Platzman accepted the award on behalf of AIS.
AIS Chief Operating Officer Steve Savage was part of a panel discussion on growing a manufacturing workforce. Savage also will take part in the Shingo Northeast Study Tour in mid-May when participants from across the country will visit AIS along with other area manufacturing facilities to gain an inside look at how world class-companies have catalyzed lean transformations on their own. AIS is a past recipient of the highly regarded Shingo Prize for operational excellence.
AIS employee Kenovit Martinez nominated AIS for the GROW Award. Martinez is a second-shift machine operator in AIS’s Leominster-based factory and attends Goodrich Academy in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. The academy offers flexibility for working students who are often older than traditional high school students. Thankful for the opportunities offered through AIS and Goodrich Academy, Martinez nominated AIS for the award.
“On behalf of AIS, we are humbled to accept this award from Kenovit and GROW. Watching Kenovit’s dedication to his career and his education is inspiring,” said Savage.
Kenovit Martinez moved with his mother and sister to the United States in 2016 from the Dominican Republic.
“When we moved here, we had hopes for more opportunities. Through Goodrich Academy and AIS, I can now envision myself going to college and studying business or music. AIS has helped inspire me and has presented me with possibilities that I hadn’t even thought of,” said Martinez.
AIS received the GROW Award in early April 2019 at a ceremony at the Chocksett Inn in Sterling, Massachusetts. Several other companies also were honored as the MassHire North Central and Central Region Workforce Boards celebrated area employers and schools helping to shape the workforce in central Massachusetts.
